If you're running a business website and trying to figure out what content to write next, Google Search Console and Reddit might be your two most underrated tools.
Here’s a little breakdown of how we used both platforms to find an interesting topic tied to a keyword we wanted to rank for, then created an optimized blog post designed to perform in search.
Step 1: Start in Google Search Console (GSC)
Google Search Console is a free tool from Google that helps you monitor how your website performs in search. It shows what keywords people use to find your site, how often your pages appear in search results, how many people click, and where your pages rank.
Open GSC and navigate to your site’s Search Results section. Set the date range to the last 3 months and make sure you’ve enabled:
- Total clicks
- Total impressions
- Average CTR
- Average position
Click into the Pages tab and look for URLs that are already getting clicks or impressions but may be sitting in an average position below 20 (so you know there’s room to grow).
Step 2: Use Filters to Identify Opportunities
In this example, we found our California Food Truck Insurance page was ranking for more queries than just “food truck.”
We:
-
Clicked on the page URL in GSC
-
Switched to the Queries tab
-
Applied a position filter to show queries with an average position less than 20
That surfaced the query “food cart insurance” — which has around 210 monthly searches globally. That’s decent search volume, and when we Googled the term ourselves, we noticed it wasn’t overly competitive.
Because the business we’re writing this for is an insurance company that only operates in California, we knew we’d naturally mention the word “California” a few times in the blog post. That means if someone searches “food cart insurance California” or even “food truck insurance California,” we have a good chance of appearing on the first page of results.
We also decided to internally link the phrase "food truck insurance" to our existing Food Truck Insurance page—since that’s the main page covering insurance services offered in California.
Step 3: Validate the Topic on Reddit
We took the query "food cart" and searched it on Reddit to see if people were talking about it.
Without filtering by date, we scanned the top results to find a post that:
- Had strong upvotes and engagement
- Included thoughtful, detailed comments
- Reflected real-world challenges people were facing
We found one where a user was thinking about starting a food cart for shaved ice and asked if it was worth it. Comments covered legal requirements, insurance, taxes, commissary kitchens, and more.
Perfect source material.
Step 4: Build the Blog Post Around It
We wrote a new blog post targeting “food cart insurance” as the main keyword. Here’s what we made sure to include:
- Keyword in the title and first paragraph
- A section summarizing Reddit user insights with our professional take
- Internal link to our Food Truck Insurance page
- Clear call-to-action to request a food cart insurance quote
- Bullet points for readability
- Relevant H2 and H3 tags for structure
- Optimized image filename and alt text
- Outbound links to authoritative .gov and .org sources (for credibility)
- Submitted the blog post to Google for indexing
